Chris Schultz - February Coach of the Month

Years Coaching:

Current team:

Rochester, NY

SUNY Geneseo

Chris Schultz was hired as head coach of the Geneseo men’s ice hockey program in October 2006. Schultz is a 1997 graduate of Geneseo where he received his undergraduate degree in special education and completed a second major in history. He completed his master’s degree in education in 2002 at SUNY Brockport.

Through seven seasons, Schultz has compiled a career record of 107-78-7. Schultz’s teams have earned home playoff positioning in six of his seven seasons at the helm; four of which the team reached the SUNYAC semifinals. In 2012-2013, the team finished with a 17-9-1 record beating Potsdam 9-0 in the SUNYAC quarterfinal game before being eliminated by Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC semifinal game. The Ice Knights set a team record for most wins in conference competition (11) in 2012-13. The team finished the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and had 13 members on the SUNYAC All-Academic team and/or Commissioner’s List.

Chosen Attribute: Teamwork

Why is this important to you?

When I think of teamwork I think of accountability. Our student-athletes have to be taught accountability in many different settings. They have to be accountable to each other. They have to learn how to win together, but more importantly, how to lose together without breaking the bonds that they have created. They have to be accountable to the campus and the community as they are constantly under the microscope with the expectation of excellence. They have to be accountable to the coaching staff because every little action, on and off the ice, is a reflection of the coaches. Most importantly to me, is the accountability of being self-less. A team that is selfless is a group of individuals that will be more concerned about the well-being of the person next to them than any individual concern on their own plate. I truly believe that the team with the most student-athletes that have no jealous tendencies and put others before themselves will, in the end, win more games than they lose.

Favorite Scripture verse:

Hebrews 4:12-13 - For the Word of God is alive and active, sharper than any two edge sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, bone and marrow;  it judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight, but all is laid bare before Him to whom we must give account.

Lately this has been my favorite scripture verse because the Word of God, Jesus Christ, holds us accountable in everything that we do. To think that the Word of God is sharp enough to pierce into the marrow of our bones and can read the intention of our heart is awesome. Jesus knows our thoughts and actions, and by God’s grace, He continues to love us. Receiving and accepting God’s grace is life changing and has helped me in my relationships with my players.

What else should we know about you?

I'm married to my wife, Christy (Purdue Golf athlete 02’), and have two boys: Will (3) and Drew (1).  I attend Calvary Chapel Westside in Spencerport, NY with Pastor Dave Tomasso.
